Seizures The Basics
Posted on: June 08, 2010Seizures The Basics
Disturbance in the typically organized, well-coordinated, and orderly electrical impulses in the brain is all that separates a normal brain function from an epileptic seizure. Under normal circumstances, nerve transmission in the brain occurs very smoothly, allowing the electrical activities to coordinate one unit of the body with other relevant units and the brain itself. A seizure happens when the brain cells or neurons communicate in an uncoordinated manner. When this happens, electrical discharges spread throughout the brain, temporarily causing abnormal nerve cell activities which often manifest as seizures.
Types of Seizure
Attempts have been made to categorize all the types of seizures. One widely-recognized classification divides seizures according to the location of origin. There are basically two major types of seizures -partial seizure and generalized seizure.
Partial seizures come from localized areas of the brain. These are subdivided according to whether consciousness is affected or not affected by the seizure. If it is affected, it is a simple partial seizure; if the consciousness is altered during an episode of seizure, it is called a complex partial seizure.
Generalized seizures occur within larger areas of the brain and are categorized further by the effect these have on the body. It should be noted that all seizures under this category alter the consciousness of the person undergoing a seizure. These are further divided into several subtypes including tonic, clonic, tonic-clonic or grand mal, absence or petit mal, myoclonic, and atonic.
Another category of seizures is the secondary generalization type. This begins with a partial seizure that spreads throughout other areas of the brain. Rare types of epilepsy or recurrent seizure include West Syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Status Epilepticus.
There are varieties of health conditions whose symptoms are identical or closely similar with those of epileptic seizure and therefore must be differentiated. Conditions like migraine, syncope or fainting, narcolepsy, and psychiatric and psychological disorders like anxiety are among the more notable ones.
Causes
There is a wide spectrum of brain abnormalities and dysfunctions that result in seizures although there are plenty of cases, around 35% of all seizure cases, whose causes are unidentifiable. These are called idiopathic seizures.
Some of the most common causes of seizures include: sleep deprivation, head injury, drug intoxication and drug toxicity, ingestion of normal doses of drugs that typically cause the decrease in seizure threshold, infection, disturbances in metabolism, fever, withdrawal from specific chemical substances such as drugs and alcohol, lesions in the brain, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and even fever. Exposure to certain traumatic events can also trigger a type of seizure known as psychogenic non-epileptic seizure.
Management
Management of seizure depends heavily on the type that is occurring. People suffering from an attack of generalized seizure should be protected from objects that could cause the person injury. Those having attacks of tonic-clonic seizure have characteristically violent, jerky movements. Any of these movements should not be suppressed. For those having an attack of epilepsy not longer than 5 minutes, medical assistance is not necessary. Otherwise, medical attention should be sought.
For all seizure attacks, persons nearby should place the patient on his side or in a recovery position.

Control Stuttering
Posted on: May 24, 2010Control Stuttering
An effective speaker is someone who can speak fluently without any trace of mumbling, rattling, and stuttering. If you speak well, people perceive you as a smart, charismatic person. On the other hand, if you often stutter and cannot express yourself clearly when you speak, people see you as an incompetent and weak person. Between the two kinds of speakers, which would you rather be? Of course, anyone would choose to be a fluent speaker.
More Foolproof Ways To Control Stuttering
However, as much as you would like to be flawless when you speak, there are times when anxiety and nervousness get the better of you. Sometimes as you speak, your tongue seems to trip itself over no matter how hard you try not to stutter. Don't worry, it is possible to overcome this speech problem if you know the ways to control it.
If stuttering has become more of a habit than an exception to you, here are the steps you can take to curb that habit:
1. Create a mental picture of what you are going to say.
People who frequently stutter fail to visualize the words they intend to say before they start to speak. Worse, most of them have no idea what to say exactly and how to express it verbally.
If you try to picture in your mind what you wish to say, then it will be a lot easier for you to find the right words to use to convey your message. It would be better if you practice visualizing the letters of the word you are going to say as you speak.
2. Perform an aural visualization.
Practice speaking the words you usually find difficult to pronounce. That way, you make it more comfortable for you to speak those particular words. Let your brain hear the words you are going to say. This mental exercise helps you get used to speaking the words that typically cause you to stutter. Stutterers who perform the exercise successfully get more confident when they speak.
3. Avoid pressuring yourself too much.
The more you pressure yourself to speak fluently, the higher your chances of stumbling when you speak. It is because you increase your anxiety and stress when you are pressured, causing you to stutter. Stressing out yourself won't do you any good-just relax and you will soon get the hang of it.

Spinning And Weaving
Posted on: May 21, 2010Spinning And Weaving 101
Spinning and weaving have been present for thousands of years. Today, there are new machines that can relatively make the work easier. The technique, however, remains very much unchanged despite the trends and other contemporary designs that have been recently introduced. It is vital that you first understand what each activity is to determine if it is right for you. You will make better works by focusing on the various aspects.
Spinning And Weaving 101
What is Weaving?
Weaving is described as the interlacing of 2 or more pieces of material or threads together to make a joined structure or work of art. The process is frequently used to create cloth, although you will also find that the approach is very common in other types of activities like basket making. Weaving has been present for thousands of years and is very popular in the modern age, as it was back in ancient history.
History
The goddess Minerva is believed to be the one who introduced the technique of weaving to human beings. The goddess supposedly turned a boastful maiden into a spider after bragging about her excellent weaving skills. Weavers are widely regarded as artisans all throughout history and the world over, since their work led to the widespread availability of cloth and fabric for various uses. Other techniques are also used popularly to make items like mats, rugs and baskets. The strength of the material meshed through weaving is very durable and sturdy. These are also highly adaptable for various functions and uses.
The Principle
Cloth weaving follows the basic principle of lacing a couple of thread sets together at a 90-degree angle. The warp is made of thread laid parallel to each other and stretched over a structure or loom to hold everything in place. The weft or woof is pulled through the warp in a pattern going under and over. The single joined piece will then be completed afterwards.
The Tools
The most important piece or tool for weaving is the loom. The structure is described as a frame that holds the warp well and will pull the weft thread or woof through. Some of the early types of the loom can be observed in paintings 4000 years old or older, up to the Industrial Age wherein the loom was produced in huge volumes. The flying shuttle was invented by John Kay in the 1900s in the United Kingdom. The shuttle let weavers work very efficiently on big looms without the help of an apprentice to pull the weft thread through. Mechanical looms was widely available during the 20th century. Hand-weaved items were almost obsolete at the time.
Single Parenting
Posted on: May 19, 2010Single Parenting
Single parenting has becoming some sort of a trend in most countries in the world. Some say it's bad because it destroys the very basic unit of any society while others believe that it's a good sign that people now know how to decide for themselves.
The advantages and disadvantages of being a single parent could go on and on. But, people should not forget that separation is not just about two people going separate ways. It should be more focused on dealing with what is left of the family and taking care of the rest.
Getting Started With Single Parenting
To those who have the custody of the children with them, being prepared and getting started with single parenting is a must the soonest possible time. This is because the adult's readiness will determine if he or she is fit to be the guardian of the child. Also, being prepared will somehow serve as an indicator how well the child would live his or her life.
Starting out right
Many mothers and fathers, after going through separation, lose their drive in becoming a good parent. This is because they have yet to deal with their own issues, making them vulnerable to any emotional baggage and possible hardships that single parenting might bring.
Experts say that the best way to get started with single parenting is to address small issues and simple tasks with the child. Although parenting might come easy for others, there are those who cannot get their acts together especially if they have been so dependent with their previous partner when it comes to raising the child. For parents like these, it would be better to start off with small and simple goals to achieve with their child. If you start small and simple, you will be able to accomplish more goals the easier way.
Another thing that can help you get started with single parenting is to continue learning. This signifies your desire to move on and look forward to a brighter future ahead of you and your child. If you continue learning new things, you will be able to acquire new skills that can help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself and for your kid. Learning different things will also open you up to other opportunities. Experts say that continuous exploration will help single parents know what is in store for them.
Single parents should also aim for success in their new situation. This is important not to pressure yourself with things that you feel you cannot do yet. If you feel that you can't work and be a parent simultaneously, you have to find a way to provide for your child's needs while you are being a full-time single parent. If this won't work, you should never stop finding a set up that would work best for you and your child.

It was 2001 when Tony Horton, a personal fitness trainer, released Power 90 via fitness firm Beachbody. The company has been committed to deliver at-home workout programs. Power 90 became so popular that Mr. Horton was prompted to release a follow-up in 2004: P90X or Power 90 Extreme. The newer fitness program stood to be a bigger success, selling up to 2 million units to date.
All the information you need for p90x is here!
P90X has so far helped numerous people attain absolutely best physical shape. The program continues to bring about incredible fitness results specifically to those who are willing to take on the rigorous challenge. To better understand P90X, it would be appropriate to know more about its predecessor, Power 90.
Power 90 is an immensely well-known 90-day exercise routine that until this day continues to draw a huge following all around the world. From there, a goal to come up with a more challenging program emerged. Thus, P90X is like Power 90 in a higher and more complicated level. Mr. Horton spent almost two years (after launch of Power 90) in doing extensive research and development for a new revolutionary exercise program that would continue what the original routine started.
Slowly but surely, P90X took shape with the help of several other fitness experts who helped design and test the exercise tasks. Newly developed P90X originally intended to focus on Muscle Confusion training science. That technique has constantly evolved since then. It has crossed time and managed to get notice even up to these days.
The initial exercise techniques that were developed were laboriously and tediously tested for many times. The resulting exercise routines are essential in making P90X truly an effective form of home workout system that the public has ever encountered. Of course, it was logical that with the development of P90X exercise routines comes the development of ideal and recommended gear and equipment for the program. Equipment designers have carefully designed and created machines that would facilitate proper and best execution of the exercise routines.
The development of gear and equipment led to the creation of the P90X Chin Up Bar, a revolutionary patented gear for exercise execution. The P90X Chin Up Bar is not only effective; it is currently considered as the most practical and useful pull-up bar for executing home-based fitness regimens.
P90X also expanded its scope. It is a common knowledge that to attain overall fitness, proper exercise should be combined with an equally appropriate nutrition. The exercise program prompted its proponents to also develop a strict nutrition and diet plan, which is genuinely healthy. When the entire system was almost complete, it was subjected to test groups for verification and testing. The initial complete system for the program was released and was initially called the P90X Xplorers. No wonder, the system not only delivered truly amazing results. It effectively captured interests and created a buzz in the health and fitness industry.
The massive success of P90X was not achieved overnight. It evolved and took some time to be completed. Likewise, people who use the fitness program to lose weight and maintain a shapely physique should also realize that having a healthy and gorgeous body is not an easy and quick task.

Motorcycle Restoration
Posted on: May 12, 2010Tips That Can Help You Finish Your Project Without Too Much Hassle
For most bike enthusiasts, motorcycle restoration projects are considered to be an enjoyable and relaxing activity. It shouldn't be stressful and it should also be a lot of fun to do. Your experience on restoring a motorcycle will depend on how you approach the project.
A lot of people quit even before they start because they don't know how to restore a motorcycle. Some may have the mechanical know-how but they just don't know how to make the project or activity of restoring bikes fun.
The first thing that you need to remember when restoring motorcycles is that you shouldn't be in a hurry. Always keep in mind that motorcycle restoration requires a lot of patience and it should be methodical. You should never scatter your attention all over the bike as this will only lead to frustration and will get you to do a lot more work than it should get.
Just like cleaning a totally cluttered basement, you should start in one corner and work your way through the rest of the basement methodically.
Although you may get overwhelmed at the required amount of work to be done at first but once you get started and concentrate on one part of the bike first, you can be sure that you will be able to get the job done without even knowing about it.
So, here are some tips that will be able to help you finish your restoration project without too much hassle.
The first is that you need to take all the parts off the bike. Make sure that you take considerable care and attention on every piece that you remove in order for you to know how to put it back again. Try taking pictures at what you are doing. This will serve as a reference in the future.
Once you remove all the parts from the frame, try to keep them separate from each other. If you can, you should try labeling them. This will make it easier for you to identify each part you took off the frame.
By taking all the parts off, you will have much better control and also more time devoted to each part when you are cleaning or reconditioning them. And, it's much better to work standing or sitting at a work table rather than being hunched over working on each part that is still attached to the bike.
Also, by taking each part off, you will be able to clean it thoroughly and you will be able to decide whether the cleaning is good enough or you may need to send it out to be re-chromed or repainted.

Breakdancing - A Modern Hip Hop Dance Routine
Posted on: May 07, 2010Breakdancing - A Modern Hip Hop Dance Routine
Breakdancing started in the streets of Bronx back in the 1970's. It was first classified as a type of street dancing involving remixed music with highly-advanced and sophisticated maneuvers. Today, breakdancing is a popular modern dance routine performed around the world -- either as a friendly competition between "crews" out in the streets or parks, dance events between groups, and of course, international competition sponsored by big names in the industry.
History
If you study dancing history then you will see that breakdancing is nowhere to be found in the records. The trend started in the streets of New York -- a way for kids and teenagers to show off their "cool moves" with the inclusion of music. It was observed that this form of modern dance is a combination of athletic moves and dance maneuvers -- with emphasis on extreme "power moves" with "freezes" during breaks in the music. The trend started with the Latinos and Black youths in Bronx, but was later performed by the general populace and eventually in the international level.
Naming
Breakdancers don't like to be called as such. They have their own terms to define who they are in this modern dance routine. Notable performers often term themselves as "b-boy" or "b-girl" and the dance itself is named as "breaking"
Break And Dance
Breakdancing got its name from the "breaks" in the music where performers put a halt on their extreme dance moves to show off. In most cases, the musics are remixed to fit in these breaks to allow more emphasis on the maneuvers. There are 5 moves incorporated into this modern dance routine, namely:
1. Toprock - steps performed while standing;
2. Downrock - emphasis of feet and body movements on the floor. This is often termed as footwork or floorwork;
3. Power Moves - these are termed as acrobatic maneuvers that require physical strength, balance, and stamina. Initial movement includes circular maneuvers for the body to gain momentum to execute power moves;
4. Freezes - the performer stays in a pose, usually after executing power moves, during the break in the music;
5. Suicides - this is an extreme maneuver that usually denotes the end of a routine.
Requirement
If you break down the fundamentals of "breaking", one will observe that the emphasis is more into the person's physical strength and balance. The moves can be quite tricky and require complete control of the body or ends up in very painful consequences brought about by lack of timing and experience.
In most cases, professional breakers who teach breakdancing often start their lessons in improving a performer's physical strength and balance. Each maneuver is executed individually until they learn to grasp complete control of their body and proceed to more complicated techniques.
There has been a major debate saying that breakdancing is more into power than style. However, breakers classify themselves into these two fundamentals -- one incorporating the use of power to amplify and support their moves, while one group focus more into mastering unique "power moves" to their dancing.Â

Cosmetic Dentistry
Posted on: May 05, 2010Cosmetic Dentistry
Traditional dentistry is basically centered on general oral hygiene - diagnosing, preventing and treating oral diseases on a person. Cosmetic dentistry, on the other hand, is generally viewed as focused more on the improvement of a person's appearance by way of his teeth, mouth and smile.
Cosmetic dentistry is more on providing desired treatments and services ordered by the patient. These treatments and services provide restorative benefits and not just from the point of view of aesthetics.
An example would be the case of simple dental fillings. In the old days, dental fillings are made of gold, amalgam and other materials that leave dark spots on the teeth.
Today, you may choose the color of your dental fillings made of porcelain or composite materials that match the color of your natural teeth. In this regard, dental fillings fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry.
There are now more dental services categorized under cosmetic dentistry at present.
Inlays /onlays / bonding
Inlays and onlays are also known as indirect fillings. These are long-lasting cosmetic fillings for teeth with structural damages caused by tooth decay and the like.
They are made in dental laboratories before being fitted and bonded into place by adhesives. (In the old days, fillings were painstakingly molded into place within the mouth during dental visits.)
Composite bonding corrects teeth that are broken, chipped, decayed or discolored. The composite material (looking like enamel and dentin to blend with the patient's natural teeth color) are applied into the cavity, sculpted and shaped into place, and hardened by lasers.
Teeth whitening
This is one of the most common cosmetic dental services availed of today. Teeth stained from smoking, food and colored drinks (and maybe also due to poor oral hygiene) are treated by bleaching them, thus enhancing one's smile.
Dental veneers
These are laminates made of composites or porcelain that are bonded to the surface of the tooth to correct and repair chips, cracks, worn appearance or severe teeth discoloration.
Sometimes, they are administered to correct gaps in the teeth, or dark surfaces not corrected by teeth whitening.
Dental implants
These are artificial tooth root replacements used in prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry. These are to replace a missing tooth (or more) in the gums to project a perfect set of teeth.
This procedure results in enhanced, healthy-looking smile in a person. (A perfect set of teeth projects health.)
Smile makeover
Basically, this is a comprehensive assessment in the aesthetics of your smile (crooked, ugly, lopsided, etc.) and the procedures to improve its overall appearance. This may take not just one or two cosmetic dentistry procedures.
These can include dental veneers, implants, gingival (gums) sculpting, teeth whitening and other procedures on both lower and upper dental arches.

Choosing A Colocation Provider
Posted on: May 03, 2010Choosing A Colocation Provider
Web hosting businesses (which may include yours) usually start small. However, as you grow, investments in hardware and others also grow by leaps and bounds. As online business trends go, colocation becomes a viable alternative.
Outsourcing one's entire operations to an offsite data facility of another company takes one hard punch of decision-making. Of course, this kind of decision should not be done without the usual preparatory probes and questions.
Costs
As in everything else, the first consideration in any business transaction is costs or the prices of the services or goods. Nobody wants to overpay but the old adage of "you get what you pay for" still holds true.
In effect, your search in terms of costs should focus on quality instead of the "advantage" of a cheap price. The low investment outlay might be countered in poor service or some such aspects. It could result in expensive (from your company's standpoint) downtimes cause by poor facilities or services from your colocation partner.
Support
With web hosting, support availability is critical in a colocation setup. This is one very important aspect in your choice of a colocation partner.
Most colocation companies offer support 24 hours a day everyday by way of phone and emails. Others offer help in live chat sessions and support tickets. However, there is a need for a fast turn-around time because problems can happen just as fast in trying to connect or set up the server.
Redundancy
In a business that deals with very critical data and information exchange, it is essential that the facilities must be redundant. This means that power, connectivity and cooling systems must have backups and extra sets for use during emergency situations.
The colocation facility must have power backups in case of power failure (extra generators and UPS units). It must have extra connectivity systems in case of hardware crashes. Ventilation and cooling systems must be backed up by another working system to take place in case of emergencies.
Guarantees
Is there some kind of a money back guarantee with your colocation provider? Because of competition, some companies offer several perks and other deal-sweeteners.
At the very least, there are those who offer a 30-day money back guarantee to prove their confidence in their product. This might lessen some of your frustrations once you are dissatisfied with their service and decide to change hosts.
Waiting time
The old saw "time is money" still holds true with colocation and more so because yours is in the web hosting business. Avoid any colocation host that requires you to wait for more than a week to get your server running.
If a company takes an inordinate time to get your company connected online, this same kind of service might be duplicated in those critical times when you need their support.

Cardio Exercise Equipment
Posted on: May 01, 2010Cardio Exercise Equipment
Coupled with healthy diet and lifestyle, cardio exercises like walking, cycling, running, or jogging can increase your heart health and enhance your body's metabolism. Cardio exercises can be done indoors or outdoors. If you're a busy person, you might prefer an indoor training (in a fitness gym or at home) than outdoor training. Here's a brief overview of the most popular types of cardio exercise equipment you can use or buy to improve your overall health:
1. Treadmills - This machine lets you walk, run, or jog in a smooth, very predictable terrain. Treadmills yield a wide variety of choices and can be programmed depending on your needs. If you're just starting out, you can walk at a slow pace on level surface. As you progress, you can increase either the pace or incline so you can burn more fats and keep your heart rate in your target zone.
Compare to running outdoors, a treadmill pulls the ground underneath your feet so running is made somewhat easier. The cushioning in treadmills helps minimize stress on your joints. If you will run on the treadmill, it is best to look for one that has speed up to 10 mph and a longer deck to accommodate a longer stride. If you will walk on the treadmill, it is recommended to look for one with a maximum speed of 5 mph and a deck that is of average length.
2. Elliptical Trainers - An elliptical trainer lets you do a workout as intense as running or cross-country skiing but without any of the impact. Elliptical trainers are not weight bearers, so it's gentle on the joints and provides a very fluid movement.
Elliptical trainers provide a variety of configurations. If you want to simulate walking or running up hills, it is best to try a machine that has an incline option. If you want to adjust the intensity of your workout, you may pedal faster, raise the incline, and increase the resistance or any combination of machine's features.

Paternity
Posted on: April 28, 2010Paternity
Paternity leave is when a father-to-be takes a break from work upon the birth of the child. Although, there it is allowed for fathers to take advantage of this, the said leave is rarely paid. The state of California was the first state to offer a paid paternity leave in 2004.
The British government has approved a paid leave, giving fathers about $200 a week while on a paternity leave. Other countries like Sweden, Japan, Finland, Greece, Australia, France Spain, Blegium, Germany, Ireland and Norway are offering parental leave benefits. Although, in the United States, paternity leave is not paid, a lot of fathers are still taking day off and vacation when their baby is born.
Actually, not all fathers are aware that their organization or company is offering paternity leave. According to Monster Intelligence Father's Day Survey, about 31% of fathers know about such work benefit. From that small percentage, only more than half of them or 58% actually used it.
In a survey by the Families and Work Institute in 2005, only 13% of employers provide paid paternity leave in the United States. This could be considered backward compared to other developed countries who are offering paid paternity leave. Take Italy as an example, fathers could have a leave for three months which still allows them to take about 80% of their salary.
Paternity leave is actually mandated by the law. According to the Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), a father of a new child, whether adopted or foster, could take an unpaid leave of not more than twelve weeks. After the twelve weeks, there should be no problems returning with your job. The employer must allow you to retain your position, salary, benefits, and work seniority.
However, not everybody could take advantage of this job-protected paternity leave. You could only take advantage of this is you have worked with your employer for at least 12 months or 1,250 hours. The paternity leave also applies if you work for a local or state federal government or any company that has more than 50 employees.

Click Here to Visit my Workplace Safety website
Different working conditions expose the worker to different kinds of injuries. Workplace safety, no matter how well planned is never perfect. Most of the accidents and injuries that happen in the workplace though could be limited if there is more vigilance on the worker and a communal desire to improve safe working conditions. Obviously, most accidents and injuries happen in the shop floor, manufacturing area, and other work areas where people are more active. This, however, does not mean that the office is a safe cocoon. Injuries, when these happen, there are just as fatal though less frequent. Overall, while workers are exposed to different types of injuries, there are injuries that are common in all places where people work.
Ignoring suggested safety precautions. Failure to report unsafe practices and hazards, performing a task without protective gear and clothing, doing several tasks at the same time and becoming distracted are common causes of accidents at work.
Falls, Trips and Slips. These injuries are caused by several factors. Rushing through without looking first is a common case. The habit of many workers, executives included, to read while walking has resulted in many bumps, scalding, items toppling over, unseen cables, misjudging elevations and misjudging distances are among the most common.
The sad thing is that not much time is saved compared to the risks involved. This, however, is not prohibited in most offices. The complications arise because executives are the leading culprits in this practice. Further, accidents caused by this practice do not happen often enough to merit being prohibited. It however causes injuries, sometimes fatal. Until this practice is banned in the offices and many other workplaces, the best thing for a co-worker to do is to get out of the way or warn when there are possible dangers in the path.
Falling, on the other hand, is the cause of most fatal accidents and injuries over the last twelve years. Being struck by falling objects has also resulted to hundreds of deaths from 1998 to 2008
Electrical incidents follow closely. Quotas, targets, deadlines coupled with a lot of other to do things within a frame of time, leave many workers no better alternative but to save time by eating meals and snacks in their cubicles. A few years back, this is fine as the use of electrical gadgets and equipment are not so common. With today's technological advancement and the use of different technologies that are electricity dependent, electrical incidents are rising.
Manual lifting. Manual lifting, for reasons that sometimes escapes practicality, people of different ages, sizes and health conditions lift things misjudging strength and weight. This common practice results to back injury, neck injury, head injury, sprains, and repetitive strains.
Other common injuries in the workplace are deafness, asthma, dermatitis, and white finger vibration. While many illnesses have medical and technological remedies, white finger vibrations are irreversible. It has been suggested that this type of injury is common to workers whose task involves excessive arm and hand vibration.

If you're planning to start a vintage poster collection, it's wise to know some things about posters, its kind and its history. Posters are not just papers with fantastic drawings on them. A poster has a story of its own. It's always good to understand why vintage posters are collected by many people.
It was in the late 1800s that people started really noticing posters. This is because various printing techniques were developed during this period. Stone lithography was first used for mass production of posters. After this, chromolithography was developed and there evolved a more vivid and colorful posters. As posters grow in popularity, several other printing techniques were used for cheaper and faster production. Examples of these techniques are photo offset and silkscreen.
Poster art became an accepted art form during the 1890s. 2 of the most famous poster artists of this period are Jules Cheret and Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec. Jules Cheret built a lithography office during this time and eventually became known as the father of placard advertisement. Because of its popularity in Europe, Paris became a street of art exhibitions and displays.
Some of the most influential poster artist in the late 1800s and early 1900s are the following:
- Jules Cheret
- Henri De Toulouse- Lautrec
- Alphonse Mucha
- Eugene Grasset
Some of these artists introduced Art Nouveau to the public.
Kinds of Posters
The development of different printing techniques and the surge of many poster artists made posters available for different uses. Some of the most popular types of posters are the following.
Propaganda Posters
Political messages and concepts are introduced to the public through political posters. Many groups have turned to poster production to increase people's awareness on various issues in the government. The Soviet Union for example, made so many productions, that their posters became great representations of the Patriotic war. Up until now, posters are being used to send messages to the public. Politicians and civic leaders use posters to communicate their platforms and plans for their country.
Advertising Posters
Posters are also used for publicity of events and various products. Comic book posters are very expensive because there are only limited productions of these posters. Concert posters of different bands and music artists are also expensive because once an event is done there would not be additional production of these posters.
Movie Posters
Aside from political posters, movie posters are also a popular collection among vintage poster fans. The lithography poster of Frankenstein, a movie produced in 1931, is highly valued because it has been said that there is only one copy of it.
Cheesecake Posters
Cheesecake posters are popularly known as pin-ups. These posters commonly feature beautiful women and have erratic concepts.
Affirmation Posters
Affirmation posters feature positive messages. Some of the most popular messages used on these types of posters are about leadership and hope. Affirmation posters are created to motivate people.
There are many types of posters that you can collect. There are no rules for collecting posters. You can collect vintage posters according to the kind of printing technique used, the time posters are made or according to its kind. The important thing to remember when collecting posters is to know how to discern a fake vintage from a genuine vintage poster.

What To Give On Valentines Day
Posted on: April 07, 2010What To Give On Valentine's Day?
Click Here to Visit my Valentine's Day website
Giving gifts on Valentine's Day has been a tradition common to many countries. Some say because such occasion has been commercialized. Some believe it to be an important day to show love to loved ones.
Even before, Valentine's Day is celebrated by giving love letters and later modified to giving flowers and chocolates until anything will do as long as it shows feelings of love. Early Valentine's Day gifts were actually love letters, flowers, and chocolates. In most traditions, if not all, these conventional gifts have stayed.
Once in history, Valentine's Day was marked as the second highest time, next to Christmas Day, people bought cards. Exchanging cards every 14th of February has been practiced long ago. The medieval Europeans had a tradition of exchanging love letters because they believed that birds began to mate on February 14. The city of Verona in Italy, where Shakespeare's famous fictional characters Romeo and Juliet abode, gets around 1,000 letters for Juliet every 14th of February.
From the first Valentine's Card made commercially in the 19th century, a variety of cards are now available in the market from hand-made and three-dimensional cards to designed electronic messages.
As time changes, celebration of Valentine's Day has also been modified. Not only people exchange cards, they also start giving love tokens, flowers, chocolates.
Flowers as a gift probably started when Charles II of Sweden brought a Persian poetical art to his country. That art is called "The Language of Flowers." Then history tells us how flowers have played an important role in people's lives like passing secret messages with a lily or lilac.
Rose is the most popular flower given on February 14. Through the years, it has been one of the primary symbols of Valentine's Day. In Roman mythology, it is the favorite flower of Venus, the goddess of love. Aside from love, a rose symbolizes peace and forgiveness too. A yellow rose means friendship and white for peace. A pink rose may mean friendship or romantic relationship. The famous red rose means strong and intense feeling of love. Hence, red roses are mostly seen during Valentine's Day.
Besides a rose, there is a variety of flowers to choose from. These flowers usually have denoted meaning too. For instance, an Anemone means dying love. A Daisy means innocence. A Lily is purity, Fuchsia is elegance, Poppy is consolation, Snowdrop is hope, Sunflower is warmth feeling, and a red Tulip is a declaration of strong love while yellow means hopeless love.
A chocolate is another famous gift during this day. Some old traditions already include chocolates as Valentine's Day gifts. Some manufacturers have made heart-shaped chocolates and decorated box of chocolates just for Valentine's Day.
Cards, flowers, and chocolates are just traditional Valentine's Day gifts today. Anything can be a gift like the carved wooden lovespoons in Wales. It is decorated either with hearts, keys, or padlocks symbolizing the "unlocking" and "locking" of someone else's heart. Serving food, especially with aphrodisiac ingredients, can also be a gift. Gadgets are also popular gifts nowadays.

Spiritual - Holding Nothing Back
Posted on: April 05, 2010Spiritual - Holding Nothing Back

Man's natural inclination is to believe in something higher than the self. This is true across all cultures, a center of the formation of most traditions, where human interactions and laws are based, and where the core of morality is founded on.
True there are people who deny belief in someone higher than the self, in someone who is far more powerful and far more magnificent. It is ironic that people who do not believe in powers higher than they are go to lengths at proving something that they do not believe in. To fight, to struggle, and argue over something that do not exist without offering compelling truths is madness. After all cultures and nations that believe less in spirits and spiritual aids are nations that has the highest suicide rates.
We have the right to be happy. Our constitution assures that, our elders protected us because of that, all our strengths direct us to achieve that. The "hole" that we sink into as we journey through life is the notion that happiness is promoted by acquiring much more than we require. The higher the tag price, the happier we are supposed to be. A shiny automobile, winning the lottery, a big house in the best location, fame, name it, everything has been tried. Yet even when these have been proven time and again to be the downfall of us, the effort is still to acquire and bank happiness on that which is temporal. As the song goes, 'when will we ever learn'? To some readers, this is a load of crap. But look deep and this is true.
The contention of people who do not believe in spirituality, higher spirits, and us as eternal beings is that wars, sadness, grief, pathos were due to religious and spiritual conflicts. This is bull. The cause of sadness and wars is greed, not religion, not spirituality. It is the desire to outdo the other to get the upper hand, to dominate, to enforce the will that causes grief and conflicts. More than anything else, it is the love of the self while everything else is secondary, if not dispensable.
Are leaders of wars supposed to be above this? They are, supposedly. Overtime, greed and acquisition creeps in and then the cycle goes if not, it is because conflicts were started on the premise of having more, and of righting a perceived wrong that was done imaginary or not, true or not.
Man's only purpose is to be. Always, without exemption, to be is to be creative. We are the only creation that is creative and thereby are co-creators. We are not fully alive unless we create positively. To create positively is to go outside of the self. Notice those who served a lot and gave a lot achieved a lot and is remembered best. They are the guideposts of everything that is good and everything we secretly aspire for. The truth is we are created out of good and will never be happy if we do not aspire for what is good.
The best thing is that the same Creator that made you and I, who keeps on providing for you and I, the source of happiness, wants nothing back.
This same God, whether denied or not, believed or not, keeps on loving even while being blasphemed.

Tips For Running
Posted on: April 02, 2010Tips For Running
Click Here to Visit my website about Running
Have you decided running regularly as a form of practical workout for your weight loss or physical training activity? You are on the right track. Running is truly a good and practical activity that could provide your body with an ideal cardiovascular or aerobic exercise. Running could make you sweat profusely, a sign that your body is metabolizing faster and burning up excessive stored fats. But you should not just run. You have to do it right and do it safely. If you are beginner, here are several useful tips to serve as your guide.
First tip: It is the right time to start running. Running and all other physical exercises are good for your body whatever your age is. Regular exercises could provide ideal benefits: you would have more energy; the chances of developing a heart ailment would be decreased; you could sleep better and get more relaxation; and you would be able to lose weight. It would never be too late to start running.
Second tip: Consult your doctor. Prior to starting running and other exercise programs, it would be appropriate to drop by your doctor's clinic. Try to do so more especially if you are suffering from heart problems, obesity, breathing problems, and chronic fatigue. Your doctor could advise you on how to get proper pacing and could guide you on how long you should keep running per session. It is not safe to overdo running.
Third tip: Begin with a simple running or walking program. It is not advisable to start on a high level. Humbly start at low-levels. You may run or walk shorter distances when beginning the running program. You may also opt to run at least once a week initially. As you go on, you could slowly increase the distance, the duration, and the weekly frequency. Notice that as you go on with your regular running exercise, your body could take greater distances and endure longer sessions. You are increasing your body's resistance.
Fourth tip: Monitor your pulse rate. Running and other exercises when done properly could help the heart beat less. This is because the heart is properly trained. When the heart beats slower especially during your relaxed hours (like bedtime or after waking up in the morning) it means the heart is successfully pumping more blood throughout the body in every beat. Perform a simple test. Get your heart beat per minute everyday, immediately after you wake up in the morning. If your pulse rate is higher today than yesterday, it means you are overdoing your exercise. Continue your running program when your heart beat normalizes.

Racquetball – The Many Donts Of The Game
Posted on: March 31, 2010Racquetball - The Many Don'ts Of The Game
Click Here for my Racquetball website
Since its invention in the 50s as an indoor sport, racquetball has had advocates and enthusiasts who had contributed so much to its lore, popularity, the refinement of its rules, and many other things.
Through the years, too, there came a compilation of sorts on the many things to watch out during games of racquetball.
For beginners, this list can serve as your guide to play and enjoy the game. For the pros, it can serve as reminders and to unlearn some acquired habits through the years. This list had been compiled through the years that racquet ball had metamorphosed to the popular that it is today.
The Don'ts list
Don't move backwards while swinging. Step forward (to lower the center of gravity of your body) and use your legs to pull your hips, rotating them around. If the ball is moving to the back, get so far in front of it (at least a step) so you will have time and room to step forward into your setup position.
Don't begin your forward swing with only the hands and arms. (There will be not much power to them.)
Don't keep one knee straight when bending your knees. You need to bend both of them, or else you are just leaning over.
Do not move your hips and shoulders in a straight line. They should both be rotating in a circular motion (start with the hips first before the shoulders).
Do not hold any tension in your arms. They should be limp and loose.
Don't force using more of your muscles if you are not hitting the ball hard enough. Instead, analyze your swing and check where the kinetic link lost its power and did not reach your arms and wrists.
You should not be unbalanced after your swing. If this happens, g back and review your sequence of moves.
Do not rise during your swing. It will make the ball come up too high for an easy setup for you opponent. Instead, keep your knees bent throughout the swing until you hit the ball. You do this unconsciously, so be alert and alarmed why your shots are not staying low.
Do not face the front wall in your swing. Stand parallel to the right side wall if you are doing forehand. For backhand, stand 45 degrees to the side wall.
Don't forget to raise your elbow to shoulder height. (Most players always forget this.)
Do not move your non-hitting arm in the opposite direction as your hitting arm. Both of them should more in the same direction.
Do not pivot both feet together. The front foot pivot is for coiling hips and the back foot pivot is for uncoiling the hips.
Do not raise your racquet to swing at the last minute. Use ERP (early racquet preparation) always.
Don't stand too close to the ball. There will be a tendency for you to slice the ball. Don't chop down at the ball. Swing parallel to the floor.
Don't hit the ball if it is still behind you. Race back and hit it only when it is even with your lead (or front) foot.
And finally, don't just read all these. You need to get out there and play racquetball like what you were supposed to do in the first place.

How To Increase Your Productivity At The Office
Posted on: March 29, 2010How To Increase Your Productivity At The Office
Click Here for my Productivity website
Do you often fail to meet deadlines at the office? Do you think you are completing less work? If you do, you should boost your productivity. Many employees do not recognize the need to increase productivity while working. If the day seems to be just a typical day, chances are, you would be procrastinating. Your motivation to get things done could be affected. It is time to be more productive so you could do more.
How could you increase your productivity at the office? There are practical ways to do so. For a start, you should learn how to properly set goals. It would be advisable to set goals everyday. For example, you should have goals for today. Those could include finishing a long-overdue paperwork, starting immediately on a new project, or completing usual tasks. Do not overlook simple and small goals. Work to achieve those goals on a daily basis. You would be surprised how much work you could get done in a week and in a month.
De-clutter your workstation. Is your office table always too crowded? There could be too many documents or piles of papers sitting on your table top. Getting your table clean is one gauge you are productive. Try to finish all the papers-to-do. Set aside or put out all unnecessary things like photo frames, figurines, books, or small ornaments. Such things could only accumulate clutter, which in turn could hamper your free and fast movement in your own work place.
Free your personal computer from many unnecessary files. Productivity is affected when your PC is full of many unnecessary files. The function of the machine could be slowed down. Finding and retrieval of important files could be harder as there would be confusion. Organize your computer files. Sort documents and categorize them properly. Delete unnecessary files or store them in your backup or removable disk.
Try not to get involved in informal chats with your officemates especially during office hours. This may seem hard but if you are truly focused on getting things done, you could easily do so. You do not need to be an anti-social. You could still enjoy your office mates' company during lunch or coffee breaks. You might as well join them at after-office get-togethers for some chit-chats. You are in the office to work, not to socialize.
Report to work on time. Punctuality is an important factor to productivity. If you come to the office on time, you could start working early. You would observe that at the end of each day, you are able to achieve and complete more tasks.
Lastly, maintain your focus. You should resist using the Internet for unnecessary activities. It would be better if you could work offline so you would not be tempted to surf porn or just chat with online friends using online messenger or real-time messaging services. Your productivity would be bolstered because there would be minimized distractions. At the end of the day, you would find yourself doing more work.
